Bed Handles Inc. Recalls Product after Three Women Die of Entrapment

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bed Handles Inc. are recalling about 113,000 adult portable bed handles after three women have died after becoming entrapped in their beds.

If the handles are attached to a bed without the use of safety retention straps, the handle can shift. The shift can create a dangerous gap between the handle and the side of the mattress, posing a serious risk of entrapment, strangulation and death.

The recall involves adult portable bed handles sold by Bed Handles from 1994 through 2007 that do not have safety retention straps to secure the handle to the bed frame to prevent the handle from shifting.

Recalled models include the Original Bedside Assistant, the Travel Handles and the Adjustable Bedside Assistant. They were sold in home health care stores, drug store and medical equipment stores nationally as well as via health care catalogs.

Bed Handles is offering free safety retention straps along with new assembly and installation instructions as well as a warning label. The Blue Springs, Missouri-based company can be reached at 800-725-6903 or online at
